Checking In

I know it's been awhile since I rapped at you guys, so I wanted to say hey, and to explain that for the past month I've been going through this weird phase where I basically haven't had the desire to listen to anything except Mozart and Miles Davis. Given that I don't have the musical vocabulary to coherently speak about either artist, I thus haven't had much to say on this blog. I'll keep you updated as the situation develops.

Did I just hear a subtle Jim Anchower reference?

And included primarily for your benefit, oh ye Jim Anchower superfan!

I got that reference, too.

Q, I'm a huge Miles Davis fan, and would love to open up a discussion about his work. What albums are you currently listening to? I have about 40 or so, and many of the box sets... I would love to help expand your collek-shun.

Wow! Well, I've had a number of his albums for years, and have always liked them, but I'm just listening to them more heavily than ever. Currently on my iPod I have Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain, In a Silent Way, and On the The Corner. I also have a copy of Birth of the Cool somewhere that I've been meaning to get onto the iPod and into the rotation. I also have burned copies of Bitches Brew and Agarta, but I've always been intimidated by the huge daunting weirdness of them both and have never devoted a huge amount of time to either.

KOB is still my all-time favorite... if you like that, you'll enjoy Someday My Prince Will Come, which is the same lineup on track 2 on KOB, with Wynton Kelly on the keys for the whole thing.

I think you'll also enjoy his Wayne Shorter/Herbie Hancock acoustic period, which comes next - my personal fave is Nefertiti (1967).

Bitches Brew is honestly not that weird to me - much less weird than On The Corner. I would actually recommend starting with Disc 2, which starts with the super accessible "Spanish Key", probably my favorite track. Give it a listen!

My favorite Miles is In a Silent Way. I'd agree with the Doctor that Bitches Brew isn't all that weird in the broader scope of music, but it meanders a bit for my taste. In a Silent Way was leading there but kept the reins a little tighter I'd say. It's also the best performance of Joe Zainiwul's career.

But in the spirit of ol' Jim, it's no REO Speedwagon.

I misspelled Zawinul.

I have this crazy great 5 disc Bitches Brew set that I would recommend. There is even a cover of Crosby's Guinevierre.

That set is great... all those extra tracks are actually from sessions laid down between Silent Way and Bitches Brew. The Silent Way box is also excellent... track after track of mellow electric jazz. What's great about the tracks on the BB set is they also heavily feature sitar... some really cool stuff there.

The Jack Johnson stuff - that's a litle too rough for my taste, especially the box set... really noisy.

Seriously, though - wait till you hear Someday My Prince Will Come... it's really the cousin of Kind Of Blue.

Any chance you could burn me a couple of those, Dr. Kittybrains?

Hi Quniapalus and Dr. Kittybrains,

On behalf of Columbia Records and the corpse of Miles Davis, many thanks for plugging Miles's voluminous catalog of albums (street date 1949-eternity)...

Thanks, also, on behalf of the label and artist for not burning any CD copies for one another and, if you / your readers want good quality, non-pirated, classic records, please browse Miles's extensive catalog with prices starting at $5.99 for that shitty '80s stuff he did with a wah-wah pedal... going up to $399.99 for certain box sets. Check www.columbiarecords.com for details on all of the artist's solo work and ensemble performances.

Please also be advised that if you do proceed with an illegal CD burn, your friends at Columbia will be forced into the unpleasant situation of suing you for upwards of $50,000, prosecuting for jail time, disabling your web site, and passing legislation to cripple the internet in general.

So please consider the ramifications before engaging in such illegal activities. If the music industry as a whole fails, it will be for lack of suing people like you more often. Know that we are monitoring you from this point forward.

Thanks again for your plug.

Regards,

WEB SHERIFF

For the record, Drischord, I thought your web sheriff comment was brilliant.

Yes, me too-- to the extent that did not go without saying. I was only bitter I hadn't thought to do it there myself.

Thanks guys. Anything for Columbia Records.
