I've been saying...No way bra- I never frontlashed. I've been saying exactly the same thing about this band all along. THey're talented and have a lot going for them, but I don't think the songwriting is all the way there. Yellow House has some amazing moments and a lot of musical melatonin. This new one is stronger and I give them credit for ambition -- it's just not all the way there. But reviews are calling it "perfect." (Besides Pitchfork (see below)). It is manifestly NOT perfect. Tiny Mix Tapes had a good review that is actually much harsher than I feel, but I did like this line in re: "Hold Still," which is track 8 or 9 or so: "Ugh. Filler like this makes me wish indie rockers were more into between-song skits."
http://www.tinymixtapes.com/Grizzly-Bear,8935

Here, Tex, I'll put this in terms you'll get (because it's along the lines of what you've been saying): I think these hugely overrated albums (which are nonetheless very accomplished), specifically Animal Collective and GB, are like indie rock working out its album fetish before (maybe) abandoning it altogether. In this download happy world, everyone wants one consensus album to be excited about --- an Arcade Fire, a Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, or, yes, an OK Computer. But in everyone's desperate attempt to locate and hype up the One Album to Unite Us All, they keep focusing on stuff that's just not really worthy of that title. i'm not saying Veckatimest is bad- it just shouldn't be the standard bearer for all indie rock!Erichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02030586653132877610noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31335050.post-6139792329838052942009-05-29T21:16:14.545-07:002009-05-29T21:16:14.545-07:00also, what's that smell? hmmm. wait,oh i know - BA...also, what's that smell? hmmm. wait,oh i know - BACKLASH!texplushhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17595399668036268554noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31335050.post-41729118672517397942009-05-29T21:15:02.469-07:002009-05-29T21:15:02.469-07:00D, i'm totally off CDs. i don't see the point anym...D, i'm totally off CDs. i don't see the point anymore. i get shit from emusic or i buy the vinyl (which these days come with either a CD or a free download anyway).
bought the GB, dirty projectors and wilco all on vinyl.texplushhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17595399668036268554noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31335050.post-11108773814036347862009-05-29T18:51:14.162-07:002009-05-29T18:51:14.162-07:00I agree that this album is overrated. Just put it...I agree that this album is overrated. Just put it through its second spin today and the pervasive mid-tempo-ness is really pronounced. Big rut between (approximately) tracks 3 and 8 and the record will have to be a true "grower" if it's going to overcome this deficiency.drischordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10415230941462114703noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31335050.post-47312858340750990792009-05-29T13:23:43.984-07:002009-05-29T13:23:43.984-07:00On the other hand, this (http://drownedinsound.com...On the other hand, this (http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4136948) makes me never want to say bad things about GB (or any band, really) on the internet-- their moms are reading! I...That's cuz it's only got four good songs - OH!
I kid, but that's kind of true. Track 1 is good. Two Weeks is fucking amazing, While You Wait for the Others is also awesome. And then probably one of the other slow songs is good. But almost none of them stand out. I do find its sound entrancing, and I've felt compelled to listen to multiples times per day since I got it, but this thing is DEFINITELY getting overrated.Erichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02030586653132877610noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31335050.post-40271307642525663752009-05-28T23:10:45.627-07:002009-05-28T23:10:45.627-07:00Tex, have you switched over 100% to mp3s at this p...Tex, have you switched over 100% to mp3s at this point?
